TV shows have a hard time taking two-year breaks. Sometimes, it’s good for a show’s creative team to take a break to get ready for another round of stories, and other times, it’s a surefire way to lose momentum.
When Walt and Jesse appear in Better Call Saul, the show has already said that. Breaking Bad’s spin-off will have cameo roles for some of the show’s most famous characters, which has caused a lot of excitement as the show comes to an end. It’s unclear how Walt and Jesse will get back together, but Better Call Saul’s teaser for season 6 may have given a small clue as to how that will happen.
Better Call Saul is primarily a prequel to Breaking Bad, and it shows Saul’s past as Jimmy McGill while getting more involved in the criminal world. The show also looks at Saul’s future, shown in black and white as “Gene,” which is what he goes by after the events of Breaking Bad. While the fate of “Gene” is still unknown, it now looks like the prequel storyline will be moving toward Saul’s partnership with Walt and Jesse.
Even though Walt and Jesse had confirmed to appear in Better Call Saul season 6, the exact nature of their roles in the new season is still unknown. The picture Better Call Saul used on Twitter to show that they would be on the show is very telling. It’s from the episode “Negro y Azul,” right before Saul Goodman is officially introduced into the show. Walt and Jesse are likely to return during Breaking Bad, just before they get into trouble with Saul.
Between “Negro y Azul” and “Better Call Saul,” Walt and Jesse make cameos in Better Call Saul. It makes the most sense. Even though they have never met or even heard of Saul Goodman before Breaking Bad, doing it any other way before would cause many problems with the story. For people expecting something more or a little different, this means that at the end of Better Call Saul season 6, there will be a time jump that puts Saul right where he needs to be to meet the two.
People who watch Better Call Saul season 6 will have to wait and see how Walt and Jesse’s cameos work out and if they’ll see more of them. Even though it’s doubtful that Walt’s role will go beyond his cameo appearance, the possibility is that both could meet in the future. In that timeline, the man who was once Jesse Pinkman is likely still living in Alaska. For now, it’s good to know the audience will get to see their favourite duo back on TV after so long.
