Obi-Wan Kenobi is the name of the show. Why? Because it’s about Obi-Wan Kenobi, of course. Despite its lack of originality, it is a concise and effective title. As a side note, Obi-Wan Kenobi (the character, not the show) is one of the most iconic characters in the Star Wars universe, even if the face of the cloaked wonder has changed from Alec Guinness to Ewan McGregor (extra crispy).
Because of this, the Disney+ series could have ended at this point. But it didn’t work out that way. Because, in addition to Obi-return Wan’s (obviously), we’ll see his former friend and foe Darth Vader make a reappearance.
The inclusion of the Dark Lord of the Sith was not made lightly. “The debate around whether or not we should do that or not carried on for quite some time,” said Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy in our exclusive cover story. Each member of our creative team has a strong opinion, and so do our fans.
Finally, we spoke with Obi-Wan Kenobi director Deborah Chow about why they decided to bring back Anakin Skywalker, exactly what sort of Darth Vader we can expect to see, and what happened when Hayden Christensen showed up in the black armor on set for the first time.”
Because one of the benefits of a limited series is the opportunity to tell a true character story, I set out to create something that was character-based and character-driven from the beginning. I believe I achieved this goal. The people who have had an impact on him throughout his life are the most important people to consider when assessing his character, in my opinion, so start there. Despite having seen Revenge of the Sith, it’s difficult to avoid seeing Anakin/Vader in that situation.
Working with Hayden Christensen was great, how was it?
We love him. And he’s wonderful to boot. And Canadian, too! That’s why it was so nice to meet him for the first time in Toronto, both Ewan and Hayden, they’ve been these characters for so long and they’ve lived with this character in their lives, which means they know the character so well, which is so helpful in terms of the creative process..”
When Darth Vader first appeared on set, how did everyone react?
The fact that Hayden was going to be a part of this series was obvious, and there was a palpable sense of anticipation on set when he first walked onto the set for the first time. As a side note, it was an eye-opening experience for me because I began to recognize the various generations of fans who have grown up with the prequels and the character played by Hayden Christensen.
How did it feel to work with such a well-known character?
When asked about it in an interview, Ewan McGregor stated that he couldn’t understand why everyone on the set was so excited until he saw Vader and thought to himself, “awesome.”
Vader’s appearance on this show is still up in the air.
We see him in the same way that we see Obi-Wan as a link between the two canons of the Star Wars saga. So he isn’t quite the New Hope Vader if you understand what I’m trying to say. Because of this, we find ourselves in the middle of this historical period alongside the main character. It’s not quite the same Vader from A New Hope, but it’s still a Vader in his own right.
