After a few years of dating, the Smiths married in 1997.
They have a son named Jaden in 1997 and a daughter named Willow in 2000.
In 2020, the couple famously shared their ups and downs in their marriage on Jada’s Red Table Talk.
1990: First Looks
Will and Jada originally met on the set of Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, where she was auditioning for her part. She didn’t get the part, unfortunately. “I met you for the first time during the Fresh Prince audition. “They [producers] told me I was too short when I was 19,” the 49-year-old mother recalled in an episode of her Red Table Talk Facebook series.
Will went on to explain how he lost out on a chance to meet Jada. “I saw this girl on A Different World, and her name is Jada,” the 51-year-old recounted telling Alphonso Riberio, his TV show cousin. “I strolled inside A Different World and sat in the crowd, and the taping began.”
Will went on to say that he had observed Sheree Fletcher Zampino, whom he subsequently married. He continues, “So I went to A Different World to meet Jada and met Sheree.” Jada wasn’t his princess at the moment, but she became his queen later.
December 31, 1997: Getting Married
After courting for a few years, Jada walked down the aisle in a champagne-colored velvet gown by Badgley Mischka to marry her soon-to-be husband, Willard Smith, who was dressed dapperly in a white tux.
Despite the wonderful wedding, Jada admitted that she had no desire to marry. “Being a young actress and pregnant, I was under so much pressure, and I didn’t know what to do,” she explained in the same episode. She also revealed that she was pregnant with Jaden and that she wasn’t feeling well at the expensive occasion. “I was in such a bad mood that I had to have a wedding.” “I was furious.”
July 8, 1998: Jaden Syre Smith Is Born
Jada gave birth to Jaden Christopher Syre Smith, who is now 22 years old.
“Being pregnant with you was some of the best moments of my life after my first trimester,” Pinkett Smith said in a Facebook video for her first child’s 21st birthday. “You were a joy to behold. You were my first concrete experience of love when you were born. You’ve taught me a lot about kindness and love. In my life, you have been a strong instructor. I consider myself extremely fortunate that you selected me to be your mother. Happy 21st birthday to one of my most prized possessions. Jaden, I adore you.”
When he acted in Pursuit of Happyness (2006), The Karate Kid (2010), and The Get Down (2011), Jaden quickly proved that the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree (2016). He’s even pursued a music career, following in his father’s footsteps, and recently released his latest single, Bye, off his fourth album, which has yet to be named, due out in 2021.
October 31, 2000: Willow Smith Makes Her Grand Debut
The couple welcomed Willow Camille Reign Smith, their only child, into the world in October of 2000.
Will discussed his tight relationship with his daughter in an episode of Red Table Talk. “Willow is the one female relationship I’ve ever had where I didn’t make a mistake,” the actress revealed. “I’m sure Willow would say, ‘No, you messed up some stuff, dad,’ but in my mind, I did the right thing by her.”
Willow, 20, has a musical talent that she shares with the rest of her family. The RTT co-host recently released Transparent Soul, the latest single from her upcoming album, Lately, I Feel Everything.
June 28, 2005: Hosting The 5th Annual BET Awards
A royal couple of Hollywood arrived at the award event in style, riding a horse and carriage. The connection between the two has a special way of making married life look fun and exciting.
April 3, 2013: An Open Marriage
Jada did a sit-down interview on Huffington Live, and fans misinterpreted her statements, presuming she and Will were married openly. “I’ve always told Will, ‘You may do whatever you want as long as you can look in the mirror and be okay,'” she told Marc Lamont Hill, the show’s host. “Because Will is his own man at the end of the day.” I’m here as his partner, yet he’s a self-contained individual. He must choose who he wants to be, and I will not make that decision for him. “Or the other way around.”
In an open letter shared on her Facebook, Jade later explained her statement. “This is how I’m going to modify my statement… Will and I both have the ability to do whatever we want because we TRUST each other. This does not imply that we have an open relationship; rather, it implies that we have a mature one.”
2016: The Entanglement
Jada invited herself to the “Red Table” in 2020 for a one-on-one meeting with Will to freely disclose specifics regarding their brief marriage separation, which ultimately led to her decision to date R&B artist August Alsina in 2016. “I just wanted to feel good,” she explained to the audience. “It had been so long since I felt good.” “And it was a genuine pleasure just to be able to assist someone in their recovery.” That, I believe, contributes significantly to my codependency.”
Throughout the extended conversation, Will reassured his wife that he will love her no matter what. The couple announced their marriage motto in unison: “We ride together, we die together—bad marriage for life!”
September 25, 2019: Checking Things Off the Bucketlist
Will just wanted to accomplish one thing for his 50th birthday: take his family skydiving in Dubai. Will Smith’s Facebook Watch series, Will Smith’s Bucketlist, filmed the entire family taking a leap of faith.
When Jada arrived safely on the ground, her family hugged her and her humorous husband said, “Are we still together?”
Of course, Jada smiled as she walked away.
April 29, 2020: “I Don’t Know Will At All”
“I have to be honest,” Pinkett Smith said at an RTT session titled “How Your Relationship Can Survive Quarantine.” One of the things I’ve noticed is that I have no idea who Will is.”
During the pandemic, Pinkett Smith claimed that they were learning to be friends. “You get into all these preconceptions of what intimate relationships should be like, what weddings should be like.”
“Will and I are in the process of him learning to love himself, me learning to love myself, right, and us developing a relationship along the way,” she continued.
June 20, 2021: Celebrating Father’s Day
Jada sent her life partner a touching Father’s Day message. “Willard, have a wonderful Father’s Day. Thank you for being such an amazing father.”
This multi-talented duo proves that while every relationship has its ups and downs, the foundation of a long-lasting marriage is mutual trust, understanding, and delight. Let’s wish Will and Jada Pinkett Smith many more years of happiness.
